Lake Tahoe

  • February 19, 2012March 26, 2020

After having to turn on the car many times during the night to heat it up, the sunrise happens at last!

That’s where we slept! It’s around 5:45AM… At least we had a wonderful view of the stars through the hatch of the car 😉

Map of the day:

We take the Scotlys Castle road to the North, to the junction with the 95 to make our way towards Tonopah. The road is beautiful in the morning lights.

We stop at Tonopah to refill the tank, take some coffee (yeah it’s around 9AM, more than time to have breakfast!). It is really cold outside, around 0°C. We decide to try to make our way to the lake Tahoe, either tonight or tomorrow. The first point is the lake Mono. Beautiful road again!

As you can see the scenaries change a lot, from the morning in the desert, to the high mountain passes full of snow, then the high altitude lake Mono. The path from Mono to Tahoe is a high altitude road, around 5000 feet with passes above 7000 feet.

We stop close to the South pointe of the lake Tahoe. Did I mention it was cold?

Despite the cold we decide to make a small walk to the Fallen Leaf Lake. Worth every breath!

However it is already 5PM, more than time to find a motel as sleeping in the car is not an option, we need a good bed, and anyway it is far too cold outside. We try Tahoe City (north of the lake). The road is fabulous! There are some beautiful inns too, but the rooms are about 300$ the night… too expensive!

Best Value America Inn has a last room, we take it! We are still registering that other guests arrive, and too bad for them no more room…

We eat at a tavern recommended by the hotel, pretty good burgers & beer. Ok we eat a lot of burgers during this trip… Time to sleep! In a real bed!!!!

Death Valley

  • February 18, 2012March 26, 2020

We start the day by loosing 200$ at the casino…Our technique does not work so well… All in all after 3 days gambling we lost 100$, not so bad…

It is time to do a little laundry…Yes 2 weeks on the road with only cabin luggages, it was bound to happen. We leave Vegas at around 12h, heading towards Death Valley.

Map of the day:

We go through Pahrump and Shoshone, two little towns North-West of Vegas.

Time for a little break. Pierre plays with the camera and the binoculars…

Ok there is nothing to see…

Soon we enter Death Valley. The valley is immense, poor cowboys that had to cross it… Adie manages to catch a coyote! It looks so cute!

The scenaries starts to be more and more desertic. We are now below sea level! Yes the lowest point in the US continental area. Look at the sea salt, it is huge!

We stop for a short walk (1 hour) in a narrow canyon. It is quite full of tourists but the views are nice. Notice the Aliens structure in the canyon walls…

It is around 4:30PM, we are heading towards Stovepipe Wells, to find something to eat and somewhere to spend the night. But we cannot resist to make a few steps in the sand dunes! Especially Adie!

After that we go to StovePipe Wells, however it is too late… all the rooms are already sold. Our best option is Beattie, 25 miles East, outside Death Valley. However we decide to eat in Stovepipe Saloon first. Pretty good choice, the burgers are decent, the beer quite good. We finish the dinner with a whiskey outside the saloon (cannot smoke inside grrr!!!!).

It is fully dark now, we don’t see anything except the side of the road towards Beattie. In Beattie, no more hotel room as well… We make a call to an hotel in Goldfield, they have a room but they will be closed by the time we get there…

We will have to sleep in the car tonight, however without sleeping bags it’s gonna be a very cold night. Better to go back to the floor of Death Valley, it was at least 10°F warmer.

Tiiiuuuu TIiiuuuuu TIiiiiiuuuu

Oh shit… Right before the exit of Beattie a police car puts the sirens on behind us…We park our vehicle, put the hands on the drive wheel. It ends with a speeding ticket, 118$… Grrr…

After 30 minutes of driving we are back to Beattie Junction near Stovepipe, we park the car, and try to sleep…
